15 GRAIN ROT tips for new crews
Quick answer
The five rules that matter most: set an extract rule before you descend (a crew wipe loses everything carried), grind bulk furniture once per room but never grind Artifacts, fire-cure Rot before boarding the elevator, learn three or four vessel types instead of maining one, and upgrade stamina first at the Outpost.
Everything below comes from how the systems actually interact — not from generic extraction-shooter advice. GRAIN ROT punishes greed differently from its peers.
The 15 tips
- Finish Biggie’s tutorial chores before your first dive
Cleaning floors and patching walls teach movement, grabbing and demolition. Skipping them slows your early room efficiency for no reason.
- Take the mallet from Murch
It is your starter demolition tool. It is deliberately weak against the Corrupted — real weapons come from inventory tiers later.
- Read the elevator panel before descending
The symbols are run modifiers: Shop Cube, Fuse, Map Room and Trap. Say them out loud in voice chat so the whole crew knows what it is walking into.
- Set an extract rule before you descend — and honour it
Pick a trigger (elapsed time, Rot percentage or loot value) and stick to it. Wiping the crew while chasing one more room loses everything carried, permanently.
- Stay shallow for your first few runs
The first biome layer teaches mallet rhythm and drops tutorial-grade artifacts. Two or three Grinder loops, then extract.
- Grind once per room, then move
The Grinder screams. It is the loudest thing underground and pulls the Corrupted straight to you. Ignoring it means you extract heavy scrap instead of bankable gold.
- Pocket artifacts — never grind them
Artifacts belong to the Outpost unlocker, not the Grinder. Grinding a glowy artifact destroys the blueprint it would have rolled. Grind furniture scrap only.
- Fire-cure Rot before boarding the elevator
Rot symptoms in transit can destroy a random Outpost room. Cleanse at the Outpost before you go back down.
- Learn three or four vessel types, not one
When your vessel breaks mid-run you possess whatever is nearby. Crews that only know one build panic; crews that know several treat it as a free reroll.
- Note where empty vessels are before yours gets low
Knowing the nearest spare body turns a vessel break from a crisis into a detour.
- Escorting a teammate’s Spark is a real objective, not charity
A Spark can float, scout and ping, but it fades. Getting a disembodied teammate into a new vessel keeps your crew at full strength.
- One survivor with loot beats four heroes with nothing
Never chase a full squad wipe for one more room. A modest successful extraction beats an ambitious run that ends in flames.
- Play your first runs with trusted friends
Physics lets teammates dropkick your Spark out of its vessel or wall you into a monster-infested corridor. The chaos is a feature, but it is a rough first impression with randoms.
- Walk, do not run, through unknown areas
The Corrupted react to sound. Running, fighting, dragging large objects and dismantling furniture all expose your position — and one creature noticing you can pull in others.
- Keep the elevator route in every decision
Remember major junctions, never seal your own retreat with badly placed furniture, and call out every floor change. Loot has no value until you extract it.
The five mistakes that cost you the run
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wiping the crew chasing one more room | Everything carried is lost — not delayed, gone. | Set an extract rule before descending and honour it. |
| Ignoring the Grinder | You extract heavy scrap instead of bankable gold. | Feed bulk furniture to the Grinder once per cleared room. |
| Grinding glowy artifacts | Blueprints are lost — artifacts belong to the Outpost unlocker. | Pocket artifacts; grind only furniture scrap. |
| Riding the elevator while Rot-sick | Symptoms in transit can destroy a random Outpost room. | Fire-cure Rot before boarding. |
| First runs with random trolls | Physics lets teammates launch your Spark or wall you in with monsters. | Learn with trusted friends first. |
Outpost upgrade priority
| Order | Upgrade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Stamina | Universal value — faster escapes save more loot than any damage upgrade. |
| 2 | Inventory tiers | More carry capacity means more loot per trip before you must extract. |
| 3 | Health and damage rooms | Meaningful once you can actually carry real weapons. |
| 4 | Cosmetics | Buy them last. They do nothing for survival. |
The reasoning: stamina is universal value — faster escapes save more loot than any damage upgrade ever will. Inventory tiers come next because more carry capacity means more loot per trip. Cosmetics last, because they do nothing for survival.
Your first three runs, step by step
- Finish Biggie's chores at the Outpost and take the mallet from Murch.
- Read the elevator panel and call the modifiers out loud.
- Stay on the first biome layer. Smash furniture, run two or three Grinder loops, extract.
- Bank the Gold. Upgrade stamina first.
- Only then go deeper — with an extract rule already agreed.
