GRAIN ROT Wiki

Quick answer

GRAIN ROT is a co-op horror extraction builder for 1–4 players on Steam, released 7 August 2026 for $9.99. You play a Living Spark inside fragile wooden vessels, riding a cursed elevator into shifting ruins to salvage loot before The Corrupted close in. Everything you extract rebuilds your Outpost.

GRAIN ROT takes the Lethal Company shape — four friends, one dark hole, a loot quota that turns allies into liabilities — and gives it a body count that does not stick and a home that remembers.

GRAIN ROT is played almost entirely in the dark. Up to four Sparks descend from the Sanctuary Outpost into the Deep Layers, salvage what they can carry, and ride the cursed elevator back up.Screenshot: Beck & Branch Games / Neem Interactive, via the Steam store page.

The core loop

The descent. Deep Layer layouts shift between every expedition, so the route you learned last run will not be there this time — which is why an extract rule matters more than a memorised path.Screenshot: Beck & Branch Games / Neem Interactive, via the Steam store page.
StepWhat you do
1. PrepareFinish chores, grab the mallet, read the elevator modifiers and set an extract rule.
2. DescendThe cursed elevator drops your crew into procedurally shifting ruins.
3. SalvageSmash furniture, feed the wrecker for Gold, pocket Artifacts.
4. ExtractGet back to the elevator before every vessel breaks. Extraction costs Gold.
5. RebuildSpend the haul on Outpost rooms, upgrades and blueprint rolls.

That loop is the whole game. The runs feed the Outpost; the Outpost determines how deep you can afford to go next time.

What is actually different about it

When a vessel breaks, the Spark keeps going. You are only out of the run if your Spark fades before it finds a new host, or if the whole crew loses every vessel at once.Screenshot: Beck & Branch Games / Neem Interactive, via the Steam store page.

In most extraction games, dying ends the run. Here, when your vessel breaks your Spark escapes and stays in the run — floating, scouting, pinging teammates — until it finds another host. The new vessel may have a completely different ability set.

Only two things are true failures: your Spark fading out before it finds a body, and the whole crew losing every vessel at once. The second one is the expensive one, because it loses everything the crew is carrying.

On top of that, the physics let your friends become the hazard. You can dropkick enemies, or "accidentally" launch a teammate's Spark out of its vessel, or wall someone into a monster-infested corridor.

Where to go next

Getting started fast

  1. Finish Biggie's tutorial chores at the Outpost — they teach movement, grabbing and demolition.
  2. Take the mallet from Murch.
  3. Read the elevator panel before descending. The symbols are run modifiers.
  4. Set an extract rule before you go down, and honour it.
  5. Stay shallow for the first few runs. Two or three Grinder loops, then extract.
