How many players can play GRAIN ROT?

Quick answer

GRAIN ROT supports 1 to 4 players in online co-op. The game is built around co-op but is fully playable solo. There is no announced player-count increase — four is the hard cap.

What crew size actually changes

Every extra vessel is another pair of hands and another noise source. Loot quotas and ruin layouts do not scale down for a smaller crew, so going in short means carrying less, not facing less.Screenshot: Beck & Branch Games / Neem Interactive, via the Steam store page.

The loot quota and the ruin layout do not scale down for a smaller crew, so the tradeoff is simple: more players means more carrying capacity and more people to distract the Corrupted, but also more noise and more chances for someone to make a bad call.

Why four is a real ceiling, not a soft one

The vessel system is what caps the fun at four. When a vessel breaks, the Spark has to find a new host before it fades out — and spare vessels are finite per run. A five-person crew would mean more Sparks than available bodies during a bad pull, which is why the design settles at four.

Playing with people you trust

One practical warning: play your first runs with friends, not randoms. The physics let a teammate dropkick your Spark out of its vessel, block you into a monster-infested corridor, or get you caught in the crossfire. The developers list this as a feature — "trolling can become your friend's demise" — but it is a rough first impression with strangers.

If you need people to play with, the official GRAIN ROT Discord is where crews form.
