GRAIN ROT Wiki: glossary and core systems

Quick answer

This page collects the vocabulary GRAIN ROT uses and the systems that tie them together. You are a Living Spark inhabiting fragile wooden vessels; you descend from the Sanctuary Outpost into the Deep Layers to salvage loot while avoiding The Corrupted, and everything you extract rebuilds the Outpost.

Glossary

TermWhat it means
Living SparkThe artificial soul you play as. It survives the destruction of its vessel and can possess a new host mid-run.
VesselThe fragile, flammable wooden body your Spark inhabits. Vessels splinter, collapse and catch fire. The starting puppet is called Scrappie.
The CorruptedHostile vessels that lost their Sparks — or did not lose them completely. They react to sound, movement and each other in ways that are hard to predict.
RotThe corruption that worsens with depth. Bodies warp, voices distort and emotes change the deeper you descend.
Deep LayersThe procedurally shifting underground ruins beneath the Outpost. Their layout changes between every expedition, so you cannot rely on memorising a route.
Sanctuary OutpostYour persistent hub — a crumbling high-rise run by the brothers Biggie and Murch. Everything you extract rebuilds it. It is effectively your save file.
Cursed ElevatorHow you descend into the Deep Layers, and the only reliable way back up. Entering resets your run currency, and extraction costs Gold.
Grinder / WreckerConverts heavy salvage into Gold and Artifacts. It is the loudest thing underground and pulls the Corrupted toward you.
ArtifactA glowing item found in the ruins. Three Artifacts in the Ball Machine roll a random structure blueprint. Never feed Artifacts to the Grinder.
ConstructA buildable Outpost structure unlocked from a blueprint.
BiggieOne of the two brothers running the Outpost. He gives the tutorial chores and quests.
MurchThe Outpost vendor. He hands you your starting mallet and sells tools and weapons for Gold.
ScrappieCommunity name for the player puppet — a fragile wooden vessel powered by a Living Spark. Players call themselves Scrappies.

The death system: vessels, Sparks and what actually fails

Flow diagram: a broken vessel releases the Spark, which either possesses a fresh vessel and continues the run, or fades out and ends it. A crew-wide wipe loses all carried loot.
What actually happens when you “die”. Losing the vessel is a setback, not a failure — only a faded Spark or a crew-wide wipe ends the run.Original diagram by GRAIN ROT Wiki — not official art.

Your vessel is fragile, flammable wood. It splinters, collapses and catches fire. When it breaks, your Spark escapes and stays in the run — you can float, scout, ping teammates and possess a fresh vessel, which may come with a completely different ability set.

There are only two real failures:

The practical consequence: note where spare vessels are before yours gets low, and treat escorting a disembodied teammate to a new body as a real objective rather than a favour.

Sanctuary Outpost facilities

Every facility at the Sanctuary Outpost
FacilityWhat it does
BedSleep to restore HP — the main, safe heal.
ChairSit to restore stamina. Chairs do NOT heal HP.
Upgrade machineRepairs items, restoring them to full durability. The same station handles item upgrades.
Ball machineInsert 3 Artifacts to roll a random structure blueprint (a Construct).
Wrecker / grinderConverts heavy salvage into Gold and Artifacts. Very loud — it pulls the Corrupted, so prefer doing heavy processing at the Outpost.
Sun / cleanseClears Rot between runs. Sunlight works too, but it damages you while you stand in it.
Cursed elevatorDescends into the Deep Layers. Entering resets your run currency; extraction costs Gold.

The Outpost is run by two brothers: Biggie gives quests and the tutorial chores, and Murch is the vendor who sells tools and weapons for Gold.

Outpost floors and what unlocks them

The Sanctuary Outpost expands as you play. The ground floor — Biggie’s quests, Murch’s shop, the ball machine and the cursed elevator — is available from the start. Further floors and facilities unlock through continued progression; the developers have not published a detailed unlock list, so treat any specific floor claim as community-reported until verified in-game.

Upgrade priority

If you only remember one thing about progression: stamina first, then inventory tiers for more carry capacity, then health and damage rooms, with cosmetics last. See the full reasoning on the tips page.
